Journalist Mark Guidi has cast doubt over whether Rangers striker Kemar Roofe be offered a contract extension to remain at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Roofe at Ibrox

Roofe joined Rangers in the summer of 2020 from Anderlecht in a deal thought to be potentially worth upwards of £10m, according to Football Insider.

He’s so far bagged SPFL title along the way, but his injury-hit campaign this year to date could result in the first time he’s failed to net double figures.

The 30-year-old has played just 82 minutes across four games so far this season, with a knee injury hampering him as well as an inability to return to full fitness, with him omitted from the squad for the last four league outings.

The Latest: Guidi’s concerns

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Guidi cast huge doubts over the future of the former Leeds United man, who’s proving a real headache at the club in terms of his lack of availability.

He said: “He’s out of contract in the summer. I think he's one of the highest earners at Rangers, and rightly so at the time, but again, that's a decision for Michael Beale.

“It's a chunky wage that's coming out of his budget and you've got to weigh it up - the pros and cons of having Kemar Roofe, who’s very unfortunate.

“His attendance record isn't great, and that's unfortunate for him; he's very, very unlucky and yet, he is a top, top player. He's one of the best players in the country when he's on his game, but that's a big decision for Michael Beale.

“It cannot be guaranteed, unfortunately. His attendance record, it really puts doubts over him.”

The Verdict: Time to cut their losses?

With Michael Beale likely to undertake an overhaul in the summer transfer window given Rangers currently sit nine points behind runaway leaders Celtic, Roofe could be one that’s cast aside given how little he’s played, along with his inability to remain fit.

However, it might not be simple for him to be moved on because, contrary to what Guidi claimed, the Jamaican’s contract isn’t up at the end of the season, with him penning a four-year deal upon arrival (via Rangers), meaning his contract won’t expire until the summer of 2024.

The Gers may opt to cut thedir losses an look to terminate Roofe’s contract, but given his reported £26k-per-week salary, that option could prove an expensive one should the 30-year-old be unwilling to cut short guaranteed wages amid injury problems that could hinder a fresh move away.
