Rangers are readying a bid to bring a Premier League defender to Ibrox, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Bassey on the way out

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been busy already in the summer transfer window with five new signings, but it looks as if more will be needed ahead of his first full season in charge at the Premiership club.

Joe Aribo, who was a regular at Ibrox last season, has joined Southampton, and Calvin Bassey looks set to follow him out the door. The Nigeria defender has been a man in demand recently, but Ajax are now closing in on Bassey’s services in a deal worth €22m (£18.7m) plus €5m (£4.25m) in add-ons.

A replacement will be needed over the coming weeks, and it looks as if that man could be Liverpool's Ben Davies.

The Latest: Davies bid incoming

The Scottish Sun shared a story on Saturday evening regarding Rangers’ search for a replacement for Bassey.

They claimed that the Ibrox giants will launch a bid for Davies and will battle Burnley in the race for the 26-year-old’s services.

The Verdict: Risky?

Davies, who Peter Risdale hailed as ‘outstanding’ and a ‘Rolls Royce’ during his time at Preston North End, joined Liverpool last year but hasn’t made a senior appearance for the Reds.

He joined Sheffield United on loan last season, making 22 appearances and standing out with an 85% passing success rate (best of anyone to start more than two league games), but a move to Ibrox could be a gamble by Rangers chiefs.

The left-footed defender is on £60,000 per week at Anfield, whereas Rangers’ biggest earner is Alfredo Morelos on £33,000 per week.

Therefore, you’d expect that Ibrox chiefs may need to make Davies their top earner if they are to entice him to join, and for a player who doesn't have a Premier League appearance under his belt, that could be a gamble.
