Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that Glasgow Rangers supporters will be 'incensed' by potential pay-outs on the cards totalling £11.1m.

The Lowdown: £11.1m pay-out?

As shared by The Athletic, the organisers of the Sydney Cup are suing the Ibrox club for £1.6m over their decision to pull out of the competition.

They were due to play bitter rivals Celtic in what would have been the first match between the two clubs to be held overseas, but the Gers announced that they would no longer be participating at the start of April, claiming that it had become clear the organisers were “unwilling to fulfil their commitments to Rangers.”

It was reported in November that the Light Blues are also the subject of a potential £9.5m legal action from Elite Sports, the brand partner of former Gers kit supplier Hummel, for loss of sales. If both figures are paid, then it would total £11.1m coming out of the Ibrox accounts.

The Latest: Rangers faithful 'incensed'

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire - who also contributes for Sky Sports - has claimed that the Rangers faithful would have been 'incensed' by the marketing of the Sydney Cup as Ange Postecoglou's 'Homecoming' and are 'tired' of off-field matters dominating over what is happening on the pitch.

He states: “The rumours of the Sydney Cup promoters suing Rangers can’t help the club. There is an awful lot of noise in relation to Rangers at the moment and fans are tired of off-pitch activities dominating what is happening on the pitch.

“Their main focus is challenging for the Premiership title this season. As such, this news will not have gone down well.

“Rangers fans were not happy with the nature of the Sydney Cup. In their eyes, there is no such thing as a friendly with Celtic. You can also understand that a match that was marketed as Ange Postecoglou’s homecoming further incensed them.

“So, while Rangers fans would be in alignment with the decision to withdraw from the Sydney Cup, they won’t be happy with the fallout.

“This is on top of legal settlements with Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct, potentially something to do with Elite Sports, and what appears to be a soured relationship with former significant shareholder Dave King.”

The Verdict: Focus needed on the pitch

With the appointment of Michael Beale as manager, Rangers' focus needs to be redirected towards what's happening on the pitch ahead of the Premiership season resuming soon following the break for the World Cup in Qatar.

Rangers are nine points behind Celtic in the table, and are already out of Europe, so full attention must be on clawing back points in the league.

The payouts may affect transfer and wage budgets ahead of the January transfer window, but Beale will no doubt be hoping that there are enough funds available to mould the team into his image.
