Pundit Frank McAvennie has advised Rangers forward Kemar Roofe to leave Ibrox this summer following the arrival of Antonio Colak at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Roofe’s situation

The Jamaica international has two years remaining on his Gers contract after arriving in Glasgow in 2020, making the switch from Belgian outfit RSC Anderlecht.

However, according to journalist Alan Nixon, English League One side Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in signing the 29-year-old on loan this season, with Derby County having also shown an interest in the player.

This news follows the arrival of Colak from PAOK, who recently joined the Light Blues in a deal worth £1.8m plus add-ons.

The Latest: 'Maybe it's the player pushing to leave'

Given Morelos’ importance to the side and with Colak’s arrival at Ibrox, McAvennie thinks it is time for Roofe to leave the club.

Responding to whether it is the right time for the forward to move on, the pundit told Football Insider:

“I think so.

“No matter who they bring in [Alfredo] Morelos is going to be the one.

“Roofe has done alright but he’s not tied down a place at Rangers. He scored a couple of goals last season and he did alright. But I don’t know how he thinks he’s going to get in now that they’ve brought in another striker.

“Maybe it’s the player that is pushing to leave, you never know who’s instigating it. I would go and say to the manager ‘is it a waste of time me fighting for places?’ and if he tells you to stay and fight for a place then you’ve got a chance.

“He’s not going to get in next season, it’ll be bits of games but that’s all.“

The Verdict: Rotation is key

Whilst Colak was highly prolific during his loan spell at Malmo last season, having scored 19 goals, Roofe could still be on the receiving end of regular game-time with Rangers’ hectic playing schedule.

Last campaign, the 29-year-old made 21 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, netting an impressive ten goals.

He further featured in nine games during the Light Blues’ incredible Europa League run, illustrating Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s regular rotation of his XI.

Therefore, with Rangers expecting to push Celtic for the title again this season, van Bronckhorst will be needing as much depth and quality as he can get, and we feel Roofe should stay at the club this summer.
