Noel Whelan has expressed scepticism at reports that Alfredo Morelos is seeking a new contract at Glasgow Rangers.
Whelan discusses Alfredo Morelos situation
It is somewhat surprising that Morelos is still a Rangers player. Throughout the summer, there was constant speculation surrounding his future, with him even reportedly agreeing personal terms with Ligue 1 side Lille. However, he ultimately stayed at Ibrox for the foreseeable future.
Football Insider revealed last week that Morelos’ representatives were looking for an improved contract with the ‘Gers. Speaking to the same publication about this move, Whelan was not fully convinced. He explained:
“Look, he is already under contract.
“You have to stand by a contract when you sign it.
“They will only give him a new contract if he is committed to the club. No more of this looking for a transfer move.
“He needs to be fully committed to the cause. Steven Gerrard only wants players who are fully committed to playing for Glasgow Rangers. That is all that the fans want to see.
“Now, he needs to go out there this season and prove himself after the fiasco during the summer regarding an exit.
“There is still a lot of trust that needs to be established, starting with a performance against Celtic.”
Alfredo Morelos must prove he wants to stay at Rangers
When Morelos is at his best, Rangers do not have a better strike. After all, he has 82 goals in 149 games for the 54-time Scottish champions, proving himself to be a deadly finisher. However, there may be questions over his commitment to the Ibrox club given the speculation over his future.
Does Morelos deserve a new contract?
He has already spoken out about his desire to move to a more prestigious league, whilst he was left out of the starting line-up in three consecutive league matches by Steven Gerrard. It seems that talk of a move turned his head, and that speculation is unlikely to disappear, even with a new contract.
Can the ‘Gers really justify a bigger financial outlay for a player who may be on the move anyway? As Whelan says, it is up to Morelos to prove that he is still an important player for Gerrard.
