Borna Barisic has been a key player for Steven Gerrard since he became manager of Glasgow Rangers and, perhaps unsurprisingly, fresh transfer speculation has emerged regarding the left-back.
According to Football Insider, Leeds United, who were promoted to the Premier League recently, are in the market for a new left-back and Barisic is a transfer target for them.
They are plotting an transfer bid for the player but face competition as Football Insider reported recently that English top-flight outfit Crystal Palace are also interested in the Croatian.
Barisic has played more than 60 times for the ‘Gers in all competitions, scoring two goals along the way as well as keeping more than 30 clean sheets, per Transfermarkt. He seems like the perfect modern full-back as he doesn’t just perform well defensively but also contributed plenty to the Light Blues’ attack, with his tally of 18 assists highlighting that he is a good influence for the Ibrox outfit at both ends of the pitch.
Clearly he is crucial for the ‘Gers and, if they were to let him go, it leaves them with only one natural left-back – 20 year-old Calvin Bassey, who signed on a free transfer in the summer – and if Gerrard wants to challenge for the Premiership title, he cannot leave the club with only one, inexperienced left-back to call upon.
The only way you can see the ‘Gers allowing Barisic to leave is if they received a crazy offer. The 27 year-old currently has a market value of £3.6m, but given how vital he is to Gerrard in a defensive and attacking sense with his creativity from the left flank, the Ibrox hierarchy would probably demand a far higher figure to even entertain any interest in him.
