Glasgow Rangers have been linked with Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney in recent weeks and now his manager Darren Ferguson has spoken out on the player’s future.
Ferguson was speaking to Peterborough Today and said: “We will have to wait and see with Ivan and it could be a distraction if his situation rumbles on. That wouldn’t be ideal.
“It would be better if things were resolved quickly, but the owners quite rightly won’t sell him unless they get the right price so it could be we end up with the best striker in League One playing for us at the start of the season so I’m quite relaxed about it.
“Ivan won’t play in the first friendlies, but if he is still here as the new season approaches I will have to play him.
“I can’t sign anyone until he leaves which again is not ideal as I would want as much time as possible with the player we bring in to replace him.”
It seems like Toney is available and willing to leave Peterborough, and it makes perfect sense for Ferguson to want the deal to be done quickly so that his club can sign players.
The Englishman had a great record for the English League One club in the 2019/20 season as he made 32 appearances and scored 24 goals as well as picking up five assists, via WhoScored. This tally saw him have the most goals in League One, as he scored a goal every 118 minutes, per BBC Sport.
It is not hard to see why he found the net with such regularity as his confidence in front of goal is highlighted by his season average 4.1 shots per game, while he averaged a match rating of 7.91 throughout the campaign, per WhoScored.
Toney is only 24 years old but looks to be a great finisher and, even though his goal tally came in the third tier of English football, he could benefit hugely from the creativity of players such as James Tavernier and Borna Barisic at Ibrox.
Also, at a relatively young age, there is plenty of scope for him to get even better and this makes him seem like a very good signing for the ‘Gers to pick up, especially with Jermain Defoe currently out with a hamstring injury and Alfredo Morelos being linked with a move to France.
