According to Jonny Hulme, Glasgow Rangers are on the verge of signing Preston North End's Daniel Johnson.

The 'Gers have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old and it now seems they are not too far from securing his signature.

At least that is according to Hulme, who says that a fee has been agreed for the Lilywhites midfielder.

Johnson may well be exactly what Steven Gerrard has been seeking. There have been calls for the addition of a creative player in the middle of the park to support Joe Aribo - Brian Laudrup has been among the more vocal in this regard - and the £2.52m-valued man could fill that vacancy.

Last season in the Championship, he scored 12 times and provided eight assists, a very solid return for a central midfielder. All in all, he has 43 goals and 26 assists in 219 games, but based on last season's performances, he may just be hitting his peak now.

If that were to be the case, the Ibrox outfit would be bringing in an exciting talent who could really give them the extra push they need as they aim to win their first major trophy since 2011.
