Jermain Defoe believes that Alfredo Morelos’ reputation may be the one thing that scuppers a move away from Glasgow Rangers.
The Colombia international has been continually linked with an exit from Ibrox over the past few weeks and months, and there is reportedly interest from Everton as well. That is not too surprising considering he has 77 goals in 137 games for the Gers, with 29 coming in the previous term alone before it was prematurely brought to a close.
“It is up to him really. He scores a lot of goals up here. He gets himself into good areas and he is hungry to score goals and has an appetite, which I like.
“The thing that goes against him is his reputation. You would like to think people would take a chance on him but it is his reputation!
“You don’t want to get a player who gets sent off and misses games when you have invested so much money in somebody.
“If he can get his head down this season, kick on again and show people he has changed because the football side is fine. It is the other side.”
As Defoe says, Morelos does have a reputation as something of a hot-head. The 24-year-old’s disciplinary record is almost as impressive as his ability to put the ball into the back of the net, although in a different way – he already has six red cards to his name north of the border.
Will Morelos be at Rangers next season?
Something of a positive is that he was only sent off twice last term compared to four in the one before that, but it is still far too much, and it is something that clubs will take into consideration when looking at him, especially with him currently valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt. It is up to him to show he has learned the error of his ways.
