As per The Daily Mail (via The Daily Record), Glasgow Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos has turned down the chance to move to Al Duhail in Qatar.
Morelos had been linked with a lucrative move to the Middle East, with it rumoured that he could join the likes of Medhi Benatia and Mario Mandzukic at Duhail.
However, it is now said that he is currently happy at Ibrox and would only consider moving to a top European league.
This latest news should not come as a surprise. From a financial point of view, a move to Qatar would have been fantastic for the 24-year-old’s bank balance, but from a sporting perspective it would have been a huge blow to his career – even though there are some quality players in the league, they are often towards the end of their time at the top of the sport when they make the move there.
Will Morelos be at Rangers next season?
After 77 goals in 137 games with the Gers since signing for £1.08m in 2017, Morelos is likely to attract plenty of interest from European clubs – it has been reported that the likes of Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have been keeping an eye on him, as have a number of clubs in the Premier League. The reported £15m the Gers are expecting from his sale may be huge north of the border, but to many clubs in England, for example, that would represent a huge bargain for what has proven to be a clinical goalscorer.
This is the right choice from Morelos. Steven Gerrard, though, will be hoping this is the end of any interest in his star asset this summer.
