Former Coventry City striker Noel Whelan has been talking about the transfer and believes the Scottish side still needs to make some more signings to strengthen the squad, whilst adding that the English Championship and Wigan Athletic in particular could be a good place for them to identify targets.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “They are making the most of a bad situation at Wigan. They have stepped in and got Balogun early doors and that is what they need. Their season starts in less than a week.
“They have got their core of players but they still need to strengthen. The Championship is a good hunting ground for Rangers.
“I feel sorry for him (Paul Cook), I really do but Wigan need the money. That is where they are at. It is a good time to raid them, so to speak, Rangers have done that.”
Like Whelan said, the defensive signing was needed and it is a good time to acquire the player as the SPFL starts soon. The 32 year-old, who has made 31 appearances for Nigeria, per Transfermarkt, played eleven times in the Championship, making 1.3 tackles, 3.9 clearances and 1.2 interceptions a game, per WhoScored. This highlights that he is very good at breaking up the opposition attacks and with his age and experience, he would be a good player to have in the squad.
It’s hard to disagree with the former forward as well on the fact that they still need more signings, one new centre-back isn’t going to stop Celtic from winning the division, particularly with Nikola Katic out injured indefinitely, and Steven Gerrard needs to make a few acquisitions so that he can have a full squad that he relies on in case one of his starting eleven are unavailable.
Wigan are currently in a dire situation after entering administration, so the Gers could cherry pick players from the DW Stadium for respectable transfer fees. It would be brutal from Rangers to do this given the Latics’ situation, but unfortunately it is just the way things are at the moment and the Scottish outfit are well within their rights to pounce.
