Former Glasgow Rangers player Alan Hutton believes that Charlton Athletic youngster Alfie Doughty could be a replacement for Borna Barisic.
Doughty could replace Barisic
Even though he is a left-midfielder, Hutton believes that he could replace Croatia international Barisic, who has been linked with a move away from Ibrox. He told Football Insider:
“I think he’s a he’s an excellent player, he’s a great talent, he’s also very young, still got a lot to learn.
“He’s left-sided so you wonder if they’re looking into the future and thinking: ‘Well, maybe Barisic or someone like that could be moving on in the future,’ and there’s a replacement.”
Square peg, round hole
Doughty is certainly a promising youngster. In seven games in League One so far this term, he has managed one goal and two assists, and he has also attracted the attention of the Gers’ fierce rivals Celtic.
Do you think Doughty could replace Barisic?
However, anyone replacing Barisic will have to be special. Valued at £12m according to The Athletic, he has been fantastic for Steven Gerrard’s side so far this campaign, already providing 10 assists from defence. As promising as Doughty is, he is not a left-back by trade – given how essential Barisic is to the Gers, the last thing they would want is to replace him with a square peg in a round hole.
