According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers are preparing to beat Tottenham to the signing of Ivan Lepinjica.

The Lowdown: Gers eye new transfers

The past campaign was a hugely successful one for the Gers, as they lifted the Premiership title without losing an single game in the competition in the process (BBC).

With a Champions League group stage spot potentially within their grasp, Steven Gerrard and co will be looking to boost their squad this summer, and the latest reports claim they have their eyes on a very talented young midfielder.

The Latest: Gers eye Lepinjica

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Gers are preparing to move for Lepinjica from Croatian outfit HNK Rijeka.

Tottenham were also said to be interested, but have been slightly put off by his injury issues.

The Gers are now eyeing a loan-to-buy move for the 21-year-old, who was a Chelsea transfer target in January (football.london).

The Verdict: Heir to Modric?

Lepinjica, who turns 22 in July, has already made 70 appearances for Rijeka since making the move to the club from Zadar (Transfermarkt). A talented player, he has even been tipped to follow in the footsteps of compatriots Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mateo Kovacic.

Given these comparisons and the fact that two top Premier League sides have shown interest in the midfielder, he is clearly a player with lots of potential.

If the Gers can secure a good deal for his services, he could be a valuable addition for Gerrard and co as they embark on their Champions League adventure, with a loan-first move potentially removing the risk involved with his injuries.

In other news, Rangers have been urged to sign this young Dutchman.
