# Rangers: McLeish suggests Glenn Middleton is entering last-chance saloon

**Former Glasgow Rangers manager Alex McLeish believes that Glenn Middleton’s short-term move to St. Johnstone is his last chance to impress Steven Gerrard and co.**

### **Last chance for Middleton**

Towards the end of the transfer window, Middleton moved on loan to St. Johnstone to earn some vital playing time.

[Speaking to Ibrox News](https://www.ibroxnews.com/2021/02/02/success-or-bust-exclusive-alex-mcleish-claims-exciting-rangers-ace-facing-last-chance/), McLeish has indicated that the 21-year-old must show what he is capable of between now and the end of the campaign. He said:

> *“That would be the mission.*
>
> *“He was exciting when he came on the scene, his blistering pace and it was really about plating all of that together with some technical skills and understanding of the game.*
>
> *“I think sometimes when you go away, and earn your stripes playing for a smaller club, it doesn’t do you any harm – it has to be success or bust.”*

### **Time is running out**

Indeed, time is running out for Middleton to make it at Ibrox. When he first arrived in Scotland as a teenager from Norwich City, he settled in well – during the 2018/19 term, he scored five goals and provided five assists in 28 matches ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glenn-middleton/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344588)). It seemed a certainty that he would feature regularly from that point onwards.

However, he [failed to make a single appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glenn-middleton/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344588) last term, instead embarking on loan spells at Hibernian and Bradford, neither of which were a success. This campaign, his on-field playing time was limited to [a single League Cup outing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glenn-middleton/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344588) – another temporary spell away from the Gers seemed to be the only option.

At 21, Middleton has to start making his talent known. He now has a few months at St. Johnstone to display his qualities – it is an opportunity he cannot allow to slip through his fingers.
