# Rangers: Ianis Hagi could play at the Olympics

**Ianis Hagi could miss the start of Glasgow Rangers’ Champions League campaign as he may be called up to Romania’s Olympic squad.**

### **The Lowdown: Champions League on the horizon**

They will start in the third qualifying round, with the first leg to be played on either the 3rd or 4th August and the second leg a week later.

### **The Latest: Hagi could be missing**

The Tokyo Olympics will take place this year after they were originally postponed for 12 months due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Romania have qualified for the football tournament and, [as per Glasgow Live](https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/ianis-hagi-set-rangers-dilemma-20537469), Hagi could be called up to represent his country. Should they reach the semi-finals, he would be unable to play in the first Champions League game.

### **The Verdict: Dilemma**

This represents a dilemma for Hagi. Having the opportunity to represent your country on a stage such as the Olympics comes around once in a lifetime. While the current health situation means it is unlikely to be an event of the usual glitz and glamour, all eyes will still be on Tokyo this summer.

However, Hagi has played a big role in helping the Gers reach the Champions League – he has managed seven goals and 13 assists in 43 matches in all competitions ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ianis-hagi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/282076)) – and could contribute to help the Gers progress to the promised land of the group stages. It remains to be seen what the £5.4m-valued 22-year-old ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ianis-hagi/marktwertverlauf/spieler/282076)) chooses when faced with this difficult decision.
