# Rangers: Agbonlahor says Gers must keep Leon Balogun

**Gabriel Agbonlahor believes it is “vital” that Glasgow Rangers keep Leon Balogun at Ibrox beyond this current campaign.**

### **Balogun must stay**

Balogun made the move to the Gers at the start of this season on a one-year deal – he is therefore set to become a free agent in a few months if the club do not use their 12-month extension option ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leon-balogun/profil/spieler/56100)).

[Speaking to Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/agbonlahor-hails-important-balogun-after-key-rangers-contract-update/), Agbonlahor has urged Ross Wilson and co to give the £720,000-valued 32-year-old a new deal ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leon-balogun/marktwertverlauf/spieler/56100)). He said:

> *“It’s vital to not split up the defensive part of the team.*
>
> *“Steven Gerrard will be looking to add to that – maybe add a couple more squad players.*
>
> *“But definitely he needs to keep the core of that team together.”*

### Important player

Balogun has been an important player for Steven Gerrard so far this campaign. He has not always been one of the first names on the team-sheet, but he has still played [23](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leon-balogun/leistungsdaten/spieler/56100) times in all competitions. In fact, the Gers have conceded just [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leon-balogun/leistungsdaten/spieler/56100) times in the Premiership with him in the side in 16 outings, while he showed his versatility against Antwerp last week when he replaced James Tavernier at right-back.

The Gers, therefore, should look to get him to commit his future to the club as soon as possible. With a potential Champions League campaign just around the corner, every bit of experience will come in handy. Balogun may well have a big role to play next season.
