# Rangers: Steven Gerrard makes transfer admission

**Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Glasgow Rangers are more interested in buying players than selling them after it was recently suggested that they may need to sell a star performer to balance the books.**

### **Gerrard makes admission**

Last week, the Ibrox outfit’s financial figures were published, and it didn’t make for great reading for the 54-time Scottish champions. The Gers [made a loss](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/steven-gerrard-insists-rangers-squad-23069469) of £15.9m in the year ending June 30, and a further £23.2m is needed in the next 18 months to balance the books.

It has been suggested that the Gers may need to sell star players such as Alfredo Morelos to do just that, but Gerrard doesn’t appear to think so. He said:

> *“The board’s support has been fantastic since I first came in.*
>
> *“In terms of the numbers, obviously you have to take certain things into consideration given the timing. They could have looked very much different if we did accept a bid for one of our big assets.*
>
> *“I think the important thing to know is that this team is in much better shape than it was when we came through the door.*
>
> *“The team is littered now with big assets. The team is worth an awful lot of money now compared to what it was.*
>
> *“Behind the scenes we’re still actively looking at the recruitment to keep improving and making the academy better as well.*
>
> *“Behind that, it’s about making the training ground and the stadium refreshed.*
>
> *“It’s about improving the club in all departments.”*

### **Good news for Gers**

This is good news for the Gers. The last thing they want to hear when they are looking to pick up a first piece of major silverware since 2011 this campaign is that some players may need to depart. Keeping the squad together this term is more important than a quick buck.

And anyway, their performances this season could well lead to a big windfall in the future. Winning the Premiership, for a start, would provide an extra boost, and progression in the Europa League would be a huge help. The Gers made the round of 16 last season and ended up taking home around £20m – a repeat of that would be perfect.

Perhaps most importantly, though, topping the Premiership table would put Rangers into the qualification rounds for the Champions League – that is where the real money is.
