# Rangers: Journalist drops Ross Barkley latest

**[Rangers](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/rangers-fc-news/) may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of free agent Ross Barkley, according to reliable journalist [Alan Nixon](https://twitter.com/reluctantnicko).**

### The Lowdown: Free agent

The 28-year-old was [released](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/barkley-departs) by Chelsea earlier this week after having his contract at Stamford Bridge terminated, making him available for any potential suitors.

The midfielder has been attracting [interest](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/rangers-fc-news/rangers-ross-barkley-transfer-news-latest-rumours-gossip-chelsea/) from the [Scottish Premiership](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/scottish-premiership-news/), with Gers, alongside rivals Celtic, both name-checked, as well as a few unnamed clubs from the Premier League.

### The Latest: Barkley to Rangers boost

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/reluctantnicko/status/1564678796392947713?s=21&t=jTxQJh-f-3Wo8XU3ESS8mg), Nixon revealed that one of Barkley’s closest friends is John Lundstram, potentially giving the Gers an advantage in the race for his services.

Asked by a fan whether there were any updates on the move, he wrote:

“Couple in Prem talking about doing something … but Rangers an attractive move … and didn’t realise his best mate was there already.”

### The Verdict: Suits both parties

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is [believed](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/ross-barkley-offered-rangers-agent-24890527) to be targeting a new midfielder before the window slams shut, and Barkley would surely be a welcome experienced addition at the Ibrox.

The 6 foot 2 star averaged 1.5 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per top-flight game for Chelsea last season ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/92547/History/Ross-Barkley)), and has made a career total of [349](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ross-barkley/leistungsdaten/spieler/131978) senior club appearances.

Rangers are looking for a creative maestro and Barkley is searching for a fresh start, so this could prove to be a move that suits both parties in the long term.
