# Rangers: Tyrese Campbell is on Ross Wilson’s transfer radar

**Rangers have reportedly identified teenage striker Tyrese Campbell as a transfer target ahead of the January window.**

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/rangers-set-sights-on-beating-celtic-to-england-based-ace-in-january-ibrox-exclusive/) reported that the ‘Gers have joined the race for the 19-year-old Stoke prodigy, claiming that his future with the English Championship club is in doubt.

According to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/rangers-set-sights-on-beating-celtic-to-england-based-ace-in-january-ibrox-exclusive/), Rangers director of football Ross Wilson is closely monitoring the youngster’s situation at the bet365 Stadium.

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/rangers-set-sights-on-beating-celtic-to-england-based-ace-in-january-ibrox-exclusive/) added that a Scottish club such as Rangers would need to pay no more than £300,000 in compensation to Stoke for his signature because of advantageous cross-border rules.

Campbell has struggled for game-time in a Stoke team lying [third from bottom](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table) of the English Championship, making just [four league starts this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tyrese-campbell/leistungsdaten/spieler/382554) and [not featuring since early November](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/353665/MatchStatistics/Tyrese-Campbell).

Indeed, as reported by [Stoke-on-Trent Live](https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-transfer-news-tyrese-campbell-3650533), he was demoted to the Potters’ under-23 squad for their game last night, such has been his struggle for first-team recognition.

A record of [three goals in 26 senior appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tyrese-campbell/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/382554) for his current club does not suggest that he would be a massively prolific centre-forward for Rangers, whose [two main strikers](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/leistungsdaten/verein/124) Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe have already scored [40 goals between them this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/leistungsdaten/verein/124).

The latter is likely to make his loan spell from Bournemouth permanent, according to [STV](https://stv.tv/sport/football/1443042-davis-defoe-and-mcgregor-agree-to-extend-stay-at-rangers/), but he will be [38 next year](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jermain-defoe/profil/spieler/3875), which would suggest that he may have another couple of seasons at best for Rangers.

With Greg Stewart the [only other recognised centre-forward in Steven Gerrard’s squad](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/glasgow-rangers/kadernachposition/verein/124) and Defoe nearing the end of his career, the ‘Gers are right to be seeking reinforcements in this position.

Gerrard has previously got it right when scouring the English Football League for prospective gems – having [lured Joe Aribo from Charlton](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48677574) six months ago, the [versatile 23-year-old midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-aribo/leistungsdaten/spieler/468198) has scored five goals and set up four in 29 appearances so far at Ibrox (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-aribo/leistungsdaten/spieler/468198)).

Time is still very much on Campbell’s side for his career to take off, while it is encouraging to see that Rangers are looking at young centre-forward targets to ultimately take over from Defoe and potentially challenge Morelos.

Although Campbell’s tame goal return and struggle for minutes at Stoke could be a concern, he would represent a low-risk signing if Rangers could get him, given the moderate compensation that would be required.

Also, the prospect of snapping up a player who is also in Celtic’s sights ([via Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/tyrese-campbell-celtic-transfer-wishlist-21110537)) should seem quite enticing given [how closely the clubs are battling for supremacy in the Premiership](https://www.skysports.com/scottish-premier-table).
