# Real Madrid: Los Blancos could move for Maarten Stekelenburg

**Veteran goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has emerged as a shock target for Real Madrid, should Keylor Navas leave the club this week, via [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7395127/Transfer-news-Real-Madrid-Everton-No-2-Maarten-Stekelenburg-Keylor-Navas-leaves.html).**

Navas, who is current understudy to Thibaut Courtois at the Bernabeu, has attracted interest from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and could well depart the Spanish capital before the transfer window closes next Monday.

The Costa Rican has reportedly grown tired of playing second-fiddle to former Chelsea shot-stopper Courtois, who joined Los Blancos last summer, and is now thought to want a fresh challenge elsewhere.

If he did leave, Madrid would be on the lookout for an experienced second-choice keeper and Stekelenburg would fit the bill perfectly.

The 36-year-old, who is currently third-choice goalkeeper at Everton, has a wealth of experience at the very top having turned out for the likes of Ajax, Roma and Southampton throughout his 18 year-long career.

[Former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina is also among Real’s list of potential candidates](https://en.as.com/en/2019/08/27/album/1566909053_690305.html) should Navas make the switch to France. The ex-Spain international is currently No.2 at AC Milan but is thought to be open to a move back to Spain to see out the final years of his career.

Although this is one of the more bizarre pieces of transfer news you’ll hear this summer, if Madrid do move for the aforementioned name it could actually prove to be a decent bit of business. Indeed, during his time as a back-up for Jordan Pickford at Everton, former manager [Ronald Koeman spoke of the veteran’s good work](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/maarten-stekelenburg-making-life-hard-13500861) on that front and praised how he kept the England ace on his toes during training.

With that in mind, perhaps he can undertake a similar role – leaning on his vast experience – in the Spanish capital having previously proven capable.
