# Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp ‘wants’ Marco Asensio

**Jurgen Klopp reportedly now ‘wants’ to sign Marco Asensio for [Liverpool](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/) this summer.**

### The Lowdown: Salah backup needed

Given that Harvey Elliott has been used [more](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harvey-elliott/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/565822/plus/0?saison=&verein=31&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=118) as an attacking midfielder than a right winger under the German, the Reds are [in need](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/startseite/verein/31) of a right-sided forward to provide backup for Mohamed Salah.

The Egypt international hardly missed a match last term, playing 51 times in all competitions ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mohamed-salah/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/148455/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=)), and he will be in need of a rest if the Merseysiders are to go the distance on all four fronts once again this coming season.

### The Latest: Asensio wanted by Liverpool

As per [Sport](https://www.sport.es/) (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/liverpool-most-interested-in-signing-klopp-wants-to-add-player-to-his-project-at-anfield/)), Liverpool are one of the clubs who are ‘most interested’ in signing Asensio, and Real Madrid are willing to let him leave for a ‘bargain price’, given that he only has [one year](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marco-asensio/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/296622) left on his contract at the Bernabeu.

Klopp ‘wants’ to add the right-winger to the project at Anfield, but the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) giants will face competition from AC Milan for the Spaniard’s signature.

### The Verdict: Risky

The signing of Asensio would certainly be risky, given that he has not exactly lived up to his hype at Real Madrid.

Once dubbed [‘magical’](https://newsrnd.com/sports/2020-12-24-%0A---real-madrid-rejoice-at-asensio--%22there-is-something-magical-about-him--we-earned-him-back%22---walla!-sport%0A--.SJt8js-TD.html) by team-mate Casemiro, and recently hailed as ‘[spectacular](https://sportwitness.co.uk/liverpool-have-come-forward-to-sign-player-road-leads-to-separation-with-club-in-coming-weeks/)‘ by his former agent Horacio Gaggioli, there was a lot of [promise](https://www.worldfootball.net/news/_n1361224_/real-madrid-sign-mallorca-starlet-asensio/) when Los Blancos beat fierce rivals Barcelona to the forward’s signature from Real Mallorca as an 18-year-old.

Now 26, Asensio has largely been a bit-part player at the Bernabeu, having never reached double figures for assists in a La Liga campaign, while his highest goal tally for a single season is 10 from last term ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marco-asensio/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/296622/plus/0?saison=&verein=418&liga=&wettbewerb=ES1&pos=&trainer_id=)).

Klopp could still transform the Spaniard into the phenomenal attacker that he once promised to be, but it could take time for him to settle into life at Liverpool.
