# Liverpool: Sevilla make it clear that Reds will need to spend big for Diego Carlos

**[According to Marca](https://www.marca.com/futbol/sevilla/2020/05/21/5ec63631268e3e9a438b4586.html), Liverpool will need to spend big to take Diego Carlos to Anfield.**

The Reds have been [linked](https://eldesmarque.com/madrid/real-madrid/noticias/180595-klopp-se-avanza-a-florentino-perez-y-paga-la-clausula-bomba-en-el-real-madrid-ed) with a move for the 27-year-old in recent months, with him said to have a €75m (£67.2m) release clause in his contract.

However, the coronavirus pandemic is likely to have an impact on player sales, and Sevilla would rather keep on to their players than undersell them.

As it stands, Jurgen Klopp’s number one pairing at centre-back is [Virgil van Dijk](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdaten/spieler/139208) and [Joe Gomez](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/leistungsdaten/spieler/256178) – between them, they have kept nine clean sheets in their last 12 Premier League games. Dejan Lovren may appear to be [on his way out](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/exclusive-four-london-clubs-want-dejan-lovren) of Anfield but €75m (£67.2m) would be a huge amount of money to spend on a back-up.

Sevilla currently have the [fifth-best](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/spanish-la-liga/table) defence in La Liga this term and Carlos has played [25](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/134984/Show/Diego-Carlos) of their 27 matches. However, he has managed an average WhoScored rating of just 6.87 in the Spanish top tier, and a successfuel duels percentage of [56%](https://www.sofascore.com/player/diego-carlos/604232) does not stand out when Gomez has won [61%](https://www.sofascore.com/player/joe-gomez/318927) whilst van Dijk has prevailed in [75%](https://www.sofascore.com/player/virgil-van-dijk/151545).

Klopp will need to add to his squad this summer if he hopes to maintain the same level of performance as this campaign but he will still need to be astute with the money at his disposal. As it stands, Sevilla will not be bullied into selling – unless that stance changes, the Reds should look elsewhere to bolster their squad.
