# Liverpool: Simon Rolfes’ comments on Kai Havertz put Reds on alert

**According to the [Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1291637/Man-Utd-Liverpool-transfer-news-Kai-Havertz-update), Liverpool are set to target Kai Havertz as an alternative to Chelsea-bound Timo Werner following comments from Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes.**

The Reds had been continually linked with a move for 24-year-old Werner (BT Sport [via The Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1286579/Timo-Werner-Jurgen-Klopp-virtual-transfer-meeting-Liverpool-RB-Leipzig)) but appear to have been beaten at the death as it was [reported](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/12000636/timo-werner-chelsea-agree-deal-in-principle-to-sign-rb-leipzig-striker) that the Blues were on the verge of completing a deal for the forward.

However, the Anfield outfit have now been put on red alert, with Rolfes saying that Havertz’s future at Leverkusen is still undecided.

Just like Werner, Havertz is one of the Bundesliga’s best up-and-coming talents. The 20-year-old has already scored [15](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kai-havertz/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/309400) goals and provided eight assists this term, and that follows on from 20 goals during the 2018/19 campaign. With 35 goals already to his name in the German top flight, he is the [youngest player](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/freiburg-bayer-leverkusen-live-line-ups-stats-havertz-bailey-koch-alario-11275) ever to reach that figure.

However, he is mainly an [attacking midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kai-havertz/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/309400) and generally prefers to play from deep. In the past few games, he has done well from a scoring point of view at centre-forward, but he has not been as strong a part of the play elsewhere. Also, the reason why Liverpool could reportedly not sign Werner was [financial](https://theathletic.com/1856250/2020/06/05/the-inside-story-of-how-chelsea-landed-stump-werner/). His release clause is €55m (£49.4m) – Leverkusen apparently want at least [€100m](https://www.ad.nl/buitenlands-voetbal/bosz-in-flow-met-leverkusen-winnen-met-mooi-voetbal-dat-kan-dus-ook~ae3ba6bf/) (£89.6m) for Havertz.

As good a player as he is, it just does not seem feasible that the Reds would be able to make a move for him.
