# Liverpool: Reds should move for Denis Zakaria as possible successor to Georginio Wijnaldum \[Opinion\]

**Liverpool are believed to have [reignited their interest](https://www.footballinsider247.com/contact-made-liverpool-set-sights-on-signing-bundesliga-midfielder-sources/) in Denis Zakaria.**

The Reds are thought to once again be in pursuit of the £32.4m-valued Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder – as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/marktwertverlauf/spieler/334526) – with the 23-year-old now back in action following the resumption of the Bundesliga over the past fortnight.

The coronavirus pandemic may have [thrown future transfer business up in the air](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52371373) but, as the European champions and Premier League champions-elect – they are [25](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table) points clear at the top of the table – the Reds will surely want to make a statement that they intend on staying at the top for the foreseeable future.

In Jurgen Klopp’s midfield, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum have appeared the [most regularly](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/startseite/verein/31). Of the three, the latter’s future is the most in doubt. Reports over the past few months have indicated that the Reds [may be willing](https://theathletic.com/1506303/2020/01/06/ornstein-on-monday-city-eye-matvyenko-and-skriniar-with-winks-an-option-for-both-manchester-clubs-var-will-not-be-scaled-back/?source=shared-article) to let the Netherlands international depart, with him having just [one year left](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/profil/spieler/49499) on his contract.

Wijnaldum may have been a stalwart for Klopp at Anfield but Zakaria could allow the Reds to move forward. This season, he has outperformed the 29-year-old. As per SofaScore, he has managed more interceptions – [1.6](https://www.sofascore.com/player/denis-zakaria/770677) to [0.5](https://www.sofascore.com/player/georginio-wijnaldum/22126) – and tackles – [2.1](https://www.sofascore.com/player/denis-zakaria/770677) to [one](https://www.sofascore.com/player/georginio-wijnaldum/22126) – per match, whilst Zakaria has also managed to win [57%](https://www.sofascore.com/player/denis-zakaria/770677) of all his duels. Wijnaldum has managed just [47%](https://www.sofascore.com/player/georginio-wijnaldum/22126).

At the age of 23, he is also one for the future rather than just the here and now. Whilst Wijnaldum has been a fantastic servant, it is time for the Reds to upgrade by getting Zakaria on board.
