# Reporter reveals Newcastle will make loan bid for Ross Barkley if Joe Willock move fails

**Newcastle United have earmarked Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley as an alternative option if they are unable to lure Joe Willock back to St James’ Park, according to [Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/) reporter Liam Kennedy.**

Former England under-21 international Willock scored [eight goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-willock/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/340329/verein/762) in 14 appearances after joining the Magpies on [loan](https://www.nufc.co.uk/news/latest-news/willock-joins-united-on-loan-for-rest-of-the-season/) for the second half of last season.

The 21-year-old also became the first player to score in [seven consecutive](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/joe-willock-newcastle-premier-league-fabian-schar-chris-kavanagh-b1852497.html) Premier League fixtures since Alan Shearer.

Willock is Newcastle boss Steve Bruce’s [top target](https://talksport.com/football/878783/joe-willock-transfer-steve-bruce-confirms-newcastle-arsenal-loan/) in the transfer window, with the club initially looking to agree permanent terms before exploring whether another [temporary deal](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9831713/Newcastle-increasingly-hopeful-signing-Arsenal-midfielder-Joe-Willock-loan-deal.html) could be possible.

However, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has [insisted](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/mikel-arteta-says-joe-willock-21046370) Willock is part of his plans and Barkley is seen as a potential loan arrival if a deal for Willock fails to materialise.

Barkley spent last season [on loan](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54352181) at Aston Villa, but a hamstring injury restricted him to just [24 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ross-barkley/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131978/verein/405).

Kennedy believes Chelsea are willing to sanction another temporary move for the [£100,000-a-week](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-9606567/England-star-Ross-Barkley-kicked-London-bar-following-drunken-row-diners-staff.html) 27-year-old and Newcastle could be his destination.

He told The Transfer Tavern: *“I think if they don’t sign Joe Willock, you will probably see loan players coming in.*

*“Ross Barkley is interesting Newcastle United, but they can’t move on to players like him and risk taking up a loan place which may have to be used for Joe Willock.*

*“They really want Willock. He is their number one target.”*
