# Sunderland: Kyril Louis-Dreyfus reveals Ross Stewart contract talks

**[Sunderland](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/) chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has revealed that the club are currently in talks over giving Ross Stewart a new contract.**

### The Lowdown: Transfer speculation

The 26-year-old has been [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/blackburn-transfer-news-stewart-championship/) with a move to the Black Cats’ [Championship](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship-news/) rivals Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window, while he was also [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/ross-stewart-transfer-interest-rangers-alex-neil-speakman/) with Glasgow Rangers in the summer.

The striker was crucial to the Wearsiders’ promotion from League One last season, scoring 26 times and supplying a further five assists ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ross-stewart/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/447995/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=289&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=)), so it is not a surprise to see interest from other clubs in his signature.

### The Latest: Contract talks ‘ongoing’

Speaking in a recent [Q&A](https://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/when-kyril-louis-dreyfus-met-sunderland-supporters-premier-league-ambitions-january-plans-juan-sartori-and-ross-stewarts-contract-on-agenda-3910742) at a club event, Louis-Dreyfus has revealed that Sunderland are in ‘ongoing’ talks over a new deal for Stewart and are ‘hopeful’ that he will eventually sign.

The chairman said: *“We are having ongoing conversations and we’re all hopeful that it will lead to a successful outcome.*

*“Football is unpredictable, you don’t know what will happen between him coming back and January, which clubs might be interested in him etc.*

*“All we can do is A) do our very best to retain Ross and B) plan for all eventualities so that we’re not in a situation where we are panicking and don’t know what we’re doing. Plan A is to keep Ross and secure a longer contract, but we will be prepared for all possibilities.”*

### The Verdict: Big news

Even though Louis-Dreyfus has admitted that there is a possibility that Stewart could leave, it is still big news to hear that talks over a new contract are ongoing, and that the club are hopeful that the striker will sign.

He carried his emphatic form from last term into the current campaign, with a stunning five goals and three assists in his opening seven Championship games ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ross-stewart/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/447995/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=289&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=)), but he has unfortunately been out [injured](https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiXkOGew6H7AhUaSEEAHddLDZgQFnoECBMQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sunderlandecho.com%2Fsport%2Ffootball%2Fsunderland-afc%2Fsunderland-post-ross-stewart-injury-update-that-fans-will-love-as-striker-steps-up-recovery-3890026&usg=AOvVaw0HkSQSFOap7gODpUNXkf1a) since.

Stewart is still clearly a key player for the Black Cats judging by his goal record, and if he does end up signing a new contract, it would no doubt be a huge boost for Tony Mowbray and his team.
