# Leeds United: Sam Greenwood to miss 3-4 weeks through injury

**Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has claimed that the club have been dealt a blow after promising youngster [Sam Greenwood](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship/leeds-united/) was ruled out of upcoming games through injury.**

With the Whites impressing in the Premier League after sealing promotion back to England’s top-flight after a 16-year absence, the under-23 side are [third in Premier League 2 Division 2](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?team=U21&co=17&se=376) as things stand. An impressive start to the season for the Yorkshire club’s young squad has seen the likes of 18-year-old Greenwood stand out, [netting five goals in four games.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-greenwood/profil/spieler/532178)

After joining [Leeds from Arsenal this summer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-greenwood/transfers/spieler/532178/transfer_id/2998774), the young striker has now been ruled out of action through injury.

The Whites confirmed the news via their [official website](https://www.leedsunited.com/news/academy/27183/sam-greenwood-suffers-injury), saying that the injury had been sustained whilst on international duty with England at youth level and that he is set to miss three to four weeks of action.

### What has Whelan said about Sam Greenwood’s injury?

Speaking on Greenwood’s absence, Whelan told [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/big-blow-exclusive-whelan-gutted-as-leeds-attacker-ruled-out-for-weeks/): *“For any young player who’s come to a new club, that is the biggest worry that you have in your mind is stopping that momentum, getting injured and being out for two, three weeks.*

*“The keyword that was in my mind was momentum and he had that going into these games.* *You lose that little bit of sharpness, you lose that bit of consistency in your performances that you’ve been getting.*

*“He’s going to have to be mentally strong now. I’m sure there’s going to be a good body of people around him that will keep him positive.*

*“It’s one of those that the under-23s, the people you buy and bring in, they’re the ones pushing to put the first-teamers out of their position. On two fronts it’s a big blow for Leeds.*

*“It is a big blow for the under-23s and for Joe Gelhardt as well. They had a great partnership going together there and it’s just stopped in its tracks.”*

### Could Sam Greenwood become a first team player for Leeds in the future?

Why not? Marcelo Bielsa’s side have the likes of Rodrigo Moreno and Patrick Bamford capable of playing the centre-forward role but other than those two players, the Argentine [doesn’t have an abundance of senior options](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/kader/verein/399).

Greenwood has certainly impressed with his recent goal tally and, once back from injury, he may force his way into contention for a senior call-up, even if only in domestic cups, provided he can pick up where he left off.

Greenwood’s injury may not be seen as too much as a disruption to Bielsa’s plans, although it is a real momentum-crasher for the promising teenager.
