Agreement reached in bitter blow to Rangers’ January plans – report

Rangers supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team’s four-match winning run in the Scottish Premiership come to an abrupt end with a 3-1 defeat to St Johnstone on Saturday.

Graeme Murty’s men had twice beaten Aberdeen as well as recorded successes over Ross County and Hibernian to get the Gers back on track, but things completely unravelled against Tommy Wright’s Saints at Ibrox last weekend. The hosts did take an early lead through Alfredo Morales, yet that was as good as it got for the home faithful as goals from Blair Alston, Denny Johnstone, and Graham Cummins secured a deserved victory for St Johnstone in Glasgow on Saturday, a result which moved them up to sixth in the Scottish Premiership table, while Rangers slipped to third.

Thus, there has been several despondent Gers fans in the Tavern in recent days, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from The Scotsman, which details that the Scottish giants have suffered a bitter blow in their pursuit of Club Brugge midfielder Riley McGree.

The 19-year-old Australia Under-23 international made the move from his homeland to the Belgian outfit back in the summer, but has failed to make a senior appearance for the club, although the team’s rise to top spot in the Belgian First Division may have something to do with that.

As such, reports emerged that both Rangers and indeed Celtic were interested in landing the midfielder in January, with both teams clearly on the lookout for young talent in a bid to strengthen their prospects both this season and in years to come.

Yet a spokesman for the Belgian club has confirmed that McGree will join A-League side Newcastle Jets on loan for the rest of the campaign, saying: ‘We have today reached an agreement with Newcastle Jets over Riley McGree’s loan spell.

‘The Australian midfielder will be loaned to the A-League club until the end of the season, but they won’t have the option to buy him.’

And this is sure to come as a bitter blow to Rangers and their January transfer plans, with attentions now going to have to turn away from the Australian in the coming weeks.

Landlord’s verdict: Riley McGree has yet to make a senior appearance for Belgian side Club Brugge since moving there during the summer, and as such has been linked with a move away in recent times.

Graeme Murty’s Rangers were one side thought to be interested in the 19-year-old, yet they have suffered a bitter blow as the Belgian outfit have ‘reached an agreement’ to loan the Australian midfielder to Newcastle Jets until the end of the A-League season.

And this is news that is sure to scupper the Gers’ January plans to further what has been a disappointing week for the Scottish giants.
