Andy King will miss Rangers’ trip to Porto in the Europa League with a muscular problem, Steven Gerrard has said.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Gerrard said King has joined Jordan Jones on the injury list but the rest of the squad are “fit and healthy”.
On Wednesday morning the ex-Liverpool legend said: The only two missing are Jordan Jones, and Andy King who has a small muscle problem. The rest are fit and healthy. (Quotes via Rangers’ Twitter account)
King, currently on loan from Leicester City, has only played five times since joining the Gers in August, but the 30-year-old’s experience could have been called upon in Europe.
Jordan Jones has been out of action since the first week of September after he suffered ligament damage during a horror tackle on Celtic’s Moritz Bauer and he’s still not ready to return.
After initial scans, a report by the Daily Record claimed the damage was not as bad as first expected and he could be back sometime this month, but the game against Porto will come too soon for him.
However, the fact everyone else is fit means that Ryan Jack has returned from injury and will be available to play, and considering he’s started six of the Gers’ Premiership games so far this season, that’ll be a huge boost.
It’s far from ideal having one of your most experienced players in King out for a European game against unfamiliar opposition, but he’s not started a single game even when he’s fit, so Gerrard mustn’t rate him that much.
The return of Jack Ryan is arguably far more important, and he’s proved that through the midfielder’s 87.3% pass completion rate in the two games he’s played so far in the Europa League.
The 27-year-old started both those matches, so it’s clear Gerrard trusts him to represent the Gers on the European stage, where they’ve won one and lost one in the group stage so far.
Their group hangs in the balance, with all four teams on three points, so Ryan returning could give the Gers the boost they need to go on and secure a place in the next round.
Rangers fans, how do you think you’ll line-up against Porto tonight?
