Approach reportedly failed as boss turns down Rangers move

Rangers will be working hard behind the scenes to sort the uncertainty surrounding the club at the present moment and look set to appoint a permanent manager but fans in the Transfer Tavern will be scratching their heads at who it could have been.

Steven Gerrard is widely expected to be named as the new man to take the helm at Ibrox, with an agreement thought to be completed in the coming days, however, it appears the former Liverpool man was not the first name on their wishlist.

According to a report in the Daily Record, the Gers were chasing Steve Clarke initially, but the club had hit a brick wall in trying to lure him away from Kilmarnock, with their understanding the Rugby Park boss had no intention of leaving the club he joined in October.

The former West Bromwich Albion manager has been impressing since arriving in the Scottish Premiership and has also worked with some of the game’s top managers during his time as an assistant manager, but has told of his commitment to his current side.

Landlord’s Verdict

The Rangers fans in the Tavern will be disappointed to hear that they could not get their first choice to take over at Ibrox, as many of the locals believe he has done a magnificent job at Kilmarnock since his arrival. The punters will be prepared to give Gerrard ago but will feel Clarke is more proven and would help them challenge for silverware.
