In recent comments made to the Daily Mail, former Celtic star Kris Commons slammed the club’s “shambolic” transfer strategy over the past few seasons.
According to Commons, who made 227 appearances for Celtic over a six and a half year period, Celtic have “thrown millions of pounds down a drain” with their signings over recent seasons, as well as him claiming that the league title “has gone”.
In the past three years, the Parkhead side spent £13.08 million in the 2018/19 season, £18.21 million in the 2019/20 season and have, so far, spent £11.43 million this year, and Commons, quite clearly, believes that the club have not spent this £42.72 million wisely.
Speaking to the Daily Mail (via the Daily Record), he said: “I fully understand the club will want to make a statement this month and try to freshen up the squad. But the damage is already done. The league title has gone and I would be very wary of the club now resorting to more last-minute panic buys.
“That’s what they’ve done far too often in the past. The recruitment has been absolutely shambolic at Celtic Park for years now. That’s what happened with Shane Duffy last summer. He was a panic buy intended to appease angry supporters after the disastrous Champions League exit to Ferencvaros.
“Now he can’t even get a game. You’ve got Nir Bitton, a midfielder by trade, playing ahead of him at centre-back. As we saw on Saturday, that’s just not the answer. Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas are another two signings who just plainly don’t look up to scratch. Celtic spent a combined £10 million on both of them.
“That’s been the problem for far too long. It’s these short-term, shortsighted panic buys the board keep going for to save face and be able to say they are spending money. Nobody is doubting Celtic have spent money. It’s how they’ve spent it that’s been the problem. They’ve thrown millions of pounds down a drain.”
Do you think Celtic have been wasteful in the transfer market?
Transfer Tavern Take
Considering the fact that Barkas has so far struggled to hold down a starting spot in Celtic’s Premiership side following his £4.5 million summer transfer window move, while Ajeti has managed just five goals over his 21 appearances in all competitions since his £4.95 million move to the club back in August, it is easy to see why Commons is of the belief that the Hoops have not spent particularly wisely.
However, over the three transfer windows previously mentioned, Celtic have also signed the likes of Odsonne Edouard, who has scored a remarkable 72 goals over his 151 appearances for the club, Christopher Jullien, who has impressed in central defence and David Turnbull, who has been a bright spark for the club in recent weeks.
As such, while it would appear that whilst the Celtic board have indeed got some transfers wrong over the past few years, there is also a case to make that they have got a number right, too.
