Celtic lead the race for Jason Denayer

Celtic are now thought to be leading the race for an in-demand centre-back, as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster their defence.

According to a report by Nieuwsblad, the Bhoys are in pole position to land Manchester City’s Jason Denayer, ahead of Galatasaray and Torino.

It is understood that the Belgium international failed to come to terms with the Turkish outfit about a proposed loan move and the Scottish champions are now prepared to win the race for him.

Denayer has experience of playing at Parkhead for Celtic and was pretty successful during his time with the Hoops when he scored six goals in 44 appearances during their double-winning campaign in 2014/15.

Rodgers is desperate to add cover to his centre-backs, with a lack of options currently, whilst Dedryck Boyata’s future at the club looks to be in extreme doubt.

The defender is thought to be pushing for a move away from the Bhoys and saw himself left out of their Champions League defeat to AEK Athens on Tuesday.

The Verdict:

Denayer would be a welcomed addition at Celtic Park this summer, as they will need to strengthen the backline.

The defender has plenty of experience of playing in the Scottish Premiership, as well as having the added bonus of knowing how to win the title.

With the lack of options available to Rodgers currently, he could also receive the assurances he wants from the manager that he failed to get from Galatasaray.
