Celtic legend heaps praise on Bhoys following recent news

Celtic supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side equal their own 100-year record of 62 domestic games unbeaten by drawing 1-1 with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers’ men dominated north of the border last season by winning the league, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup, and they are just 90 minutes away from defending one of those crowns having reached the showpiece of the latter just over a week ago. And they remain top of the Scottish Premiership as well after drawing 1-1 with Steve Clarke’s Killy at Celtic Park on Saturday, with Leigh Griffiths’ first half strike cancelled out by Jordan Jones’ effort on the hour mark.

Nonetheless, several of our resident Bhoys supporters have been toasting their side’s incredible achievement this week, and they are also likely to be thrilled by recent news of Kieran Tierney’s new six-year deal at the club, something which club legend Chris Sutton has also reacted to.

The former striker spent six years north of the border between 2000 and 2006, and in that time scored 86 goals in just 199 games for Celtic, helping them to five Scottish Premier League titles, three Scottish Cups, and indeed to the final of the UEFA Cup back in 2003.

And the 44-year-old has post-retirement turned his attentions to punditry, most notably with the BBC and BT Sport, but it was on Twitter where he responded to news of Tierney’s new deal, and it’s fair to say he was chuffed with the announcement.

And it’s an opinion which likely resonates with several of our resident Celtic supporters, especially given the left-back has reportedly been attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in England in recent times.

But it’s now going to be difficult for them to prize Tierney away from Celtic Park in the coming transfer windows.

Landlord’s verdict: Superb and clever – those were the words used by Celtic legend Chris Sutton regarding his club’s move to tie Kieran Tierney down to new long-term deal, and it’s an opinion which is likely to be similar to several Celtic supporters around the globe.

The left-back has been outstanding for the Bhoys in the last few years since breaking through into the first team, and has impressed so much that he has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham.

And that’s probably where the ‘clever’ comes in from Sutton given that the Premier League duo will now have to pay significantly more to lure him away from Celtic Park than originally, so Brendan Rodgers’ side are surely onto a winner either way.
