Celtic: Noel Whelan stands by Neil Lennon’s decision to drop Ismaila Soro - Celtic

Former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan believes that Celtic manager Neil Lennon made the right call by dropping midfielder Ismaila Soro for the Scottish Cup Final.

Lennon in the right?

The 22-year-old was left out by the Irish tactician in favour of the long-serving Bhoys skipper Scott Brown, despite putting in some solid performances. The Hoops won the contest on penalties against Hearts to secure an unprecedented quadruple treble.

During the build-up to their cup triumph, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believed that not selecting Soro would put even more pressure on Lennon’s shoulders after the recent mass protests against him, stressing that going down the “sentimental route” would send the wrong message (via BT Sport).

There's no way you can name all ten obscure Celtic players! First up, who is this?

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan believes that Lennon made the right ball – albeit a challenging one.

“I think you’ve got to go with experience. I think it was a good decision to make. It’s a difficult one, don’t get me wrong.

“But as a manager, you’ve got to make these difficult decisions. Scott Brown, you know he’s a leader out there, he’s one of these players that he’s been at the club a long, long time.

“He’s played in many cup finals. I think you need these sorts of players out on the field when it comes to these sorts of games.

“Despite the fact you’re playing against Hearts [who are] a league below you, I think you’ve got to go to tried and trusted.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

While Sutton may not have agreed with the decision before the game, Lennon ultimately made the right move by picking Brown over Soro, as surprising as it may have been.

Despite this, Lennon still has a lot of work to do if he is going to change the minds of his critics, and Soro will certainly get more opportunities under his belt.

There is still a lot to play for with huge games on the horizon for Celtic, and Soro will be looking to be in contention to feature.
