Celtic made it three out of three and continued their 100 % start to the new SPL season with a comfortable 5-1 win over Dundee United at Parkhead today.
The match was played in memory of Celtic Legend Willie Fernie who died this week aged 82 and a minutes applause took part before kick-off. The Hoops didn’t disappoint home fans as they swept away a United team that looked very short in quality and numbers. Here is my player ratings for the Celtic starting eleven and subs that featured also.
Lucasz Zaluska – 8 He had an exellent game in goals today. Pulled off a number of top class saves, looked comfortable between the posts for once. Could do nothing for goal as his defence let him down badly. This game will give him bags of confidence going into the Europa League game with F.C Sion.
Mark Wilson – 6 Had a decent game. Distributed the ball well and constantly got up and down the right side of the park. As ever put in a good shift and was rarely caught out in defence. Caught napping for Utd goal as were the rest of the back four.
Daniel Majstorovic – 5 He had an O.K. game in honesty he struggled with the pace of Johnny Russell. However he did have a hand in the first goal heading the ball on to Stokes. It was his poorly cleared header that caused the Utd goal. Although not completely at fault.
Kelvin Wilson – 7 Had a good game at the back and kept Daly quiet. Switched off for the goal but other than that he was solid. Also he was comfortable on the ball and very good in the air. Always looking to drive out of defence with the ball and start moves and a good passer of the ball. Looks to be a very good signing.
Charlie Mulgrew – 6 Got up and down the left side well and his delivery into the box was decent. Let Gary Kenneth give him the slip in the lead up to Utd’s goal. Defended well otherwise and played well in place of injured Izaguirre. Scott Brown – 9 One of the best games I’ve seen Brown play. He was everywhere today. Drove forward with ball in midfield creating chances as well as mucking in at the back. Never scared of a tackle and constantly hounded the opposition in search of the ball. Received a few harsh tackles intended to wind him up but he never rose to the bait and continue to play his game. Looked like a captain today with his performance.
Ki Sung Yueng – 8 Good strong performance today again from the Korean. Looking better and better every time he pulls on the strip. On the score sheet again after finishing off a lovely counter attacking move. Very good eye for a pass and a constant threat with his runs and long range shooting.
Joe Ledley – 8 Another quiet but comfortable afternoon for the Welshman. Broke up a number of opposing attacks but he also distributes the ball very cleverly. Starting to make runs into the box and managed to grab himself a goal today as well. Getting on the end of a Shaun Maloney cross.
Kris Commons – 9 Was outstanding today. Drove at the Utd defence constantly and his delivery into the box was very good. Was very unlucky not to get on the score sheet himself with Dusan Pernis pulling off a couple of decent stops to deny him. He also had a shot cannon back of the post after being played through by Stokes. Replaced by Forrest for the last 15.
Gary Hooper – 9 Very good performance from Hooper today. He linked up very well with Stokes and opened his account for the season too. Their partnership for the Hoops is getting stronger every time they player together. Some of his flicks, runs, one touch passing and moving was tremendous. Unfortunately he was taken off injured in a stretcher and looked in real pain late on in the second half after a rash tackle by a Utd defender. He was replaced by Shaun Maloney.
Anthony Stokes – 10 My man of the match today and out of a few worthy candidates. Continued his scoring run and was unlucky not to add more to it. Had a part in all goals before he came off and he looked a threat every time he had the ball. The Utd defence just couldn’t deal with him and his runs. Replaced by McCourt for the last 10 minutes.
Subs – James Forrest – Made a good impact when he came on. Ran at tired Utd defenders and caused them problems. Involved in move for Ledley’s goal and got on the score sheet himself right at the death.
Shaun Maloney – Came on for the injured Hooper and looked lively. Caused the Utd defence problems with his trickery and quick feet. Did well to get to the by line and supply the cross for Ledley to tap in the 4th.
Paddy McCourt – Came on for Stokes late on. Not really given much time to make an impact. However he did make a few trademark runs and at times there were 3 and 4 Utd defenders round him trying to stop him. Involved in play leading up to Forrest’s goal.
