According to German newspaper Bild, Celtic are interested in signing Wolfsburg centre-back Jeffrey Bruma for a fee of £7m.
This is a fee that Wolfsburg will reportedly not turn down, and would be a very good bit of business for the Glaswegian club.
The 26-year-old defender seems to have fallen out of favour with the Bundesliga club, and was not even included in the 18-man squad to face Elversberg in the German cup last weekend. The Dutchman endured an injury-ravaged season last year and may have fallen down the pecking order with The Wolves. Celtic should offer him the perfect lifeline in order to avoid another disappointing season.
The list of centre-backs that Celtic are linked with seems to be growing minute by minute, but alas for The Bhoys fans, there have been no incoming defenders this transfer window. With 10 days left to make a purchase, manager Brendan Rodgers and all Celtic fans will be growing increasingly anxious, fearing the window will pass them by without strengthening their suspect defence.
To make matters worse, the growing speculation surrounding Dedryck Boyata’s future means The Hoops’ defence could be decimated come September. That is why Bruma (valued at £5.4m on Transfermarkt.co.uk) would be so important to Rodgers.
As many of Celtic’s transfer rumours have not come to fruition so far this summer, it’s hard to believe this rumour regarding Bruma. But if it were to be true, there’s no doubt that he would bolster Celtic’s defence.
The former Chelsea man is extremely powerful, and would be a stalwart of what is currently a flailing Celtic defence. He would be a commanding presence to immediately replace Boyata, if the Belgian were to leave.
So once again this summer, Celtic are interested in a defender. But it is crucial, before it’s too late, that Celtic sign this man.
