With Celtic announcing the signing of Kelvin Wilson at Parkhead yesterday, the bid to take the Scottish Premier League title back from Rangers this season has now started.
With Cardiff youngster Adam Matthews soon to follow Wilson it begs the question every Celtic fan is dying to know the answer to. WHO WILL LENNON SIGN NEXT???
The Celtic boss has a lot of players surplus to requirements at Parkhead and may well want to clear out some of the deadwood in his squad before bringing in any new faces though. Names such as Andreas Hinkel, Efrain Juarez, Joos Hooiveld, Freddie Ljungberg, Morten Rasmussen, Daryl Murphy and Giorgos Samaras could all be heading out the exit door at Celtic Park.
With Samaras looking likely to be heading to Lokomotiv Moscow in a £3 million deal, Hinkel looking to head home to Germany with Stuttgart and Hooiveld being linked with a permanent return to Copenhagen.
This will bring in some funds and free some more money for new players wages. If or when the Celtic boss does decide to get involved in the transfer market again which area of his squad will he be looking to strengthen? The Hoops have been linked with a number of players over the last few weeks. Shay Given, Robbie Keane and James McFadden to name a few.
They are sure to be linked with many more before the start of the season but here are some of the more realistic names being linked with the club.
Sean St Ledger. The Irish international centre back was being tracked by Neil Lennon last summer but was priced out of a move with the high asking price by Preston. With North End now being relegated to League 1 both the club and the player are looking to pastures new as St Ledger doesn’t seem happy to play in England’s third tear of football and Preston unable to afford his wages. This could open the door for Celtic to get their hands on their man eventually and maybe even at a cut price fee.
Jay Boothroyd is another. The England striker is out of contract having being one of the many players released by Cardiff at the end of last season and has been speaking to his former team-mate Joe Ledley about what life is like up at Parkhead.
The former Wolves and Coventry striker averaged a goal every two games last season in The Championship and also earned his first England cap in the process. He could be the target man the The Hoops front line has been looking for and on a free could be a real good piece of business for them.
Kieran Westwood – The 26 year old Irish keeper is another player who is out of contract at his club Coventry City and available of a free transfer. With Fraser Forster returning to Newcastle. Celtic are in the market for a goalkeeper and this deal could suit both parties with Celtic looking for a strong number one between the sticks and Westwood looking to move to a big club and show his Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trappatonni that he has what it takes to take over from Shay Given when he hangs up his gloves.
All three of these deals would be a dream come true for most fans at Celtic Park but I am sure even just one of them would add enough quality to the team already to be able to take back the league championship.
