According to a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, Ragnar Klavan could be set for a move away this summer. The centre back currently plays his football at Premier League giants Liverpool and has done so since the summer of 2016, although it looks as though he is behind the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, and Joe Gomez in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order to plunge his future at Anfield into doubt.
And with reports recently suggesting that Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata is refusing to play for the club following the breakdown of his proposed move to Fulham, Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers must seek to resolve that issue by raiding his former employers for the 32-year-old.
Ultimately, Boyata’s stock has risen ten-fold during his time at Parkhead given he has helped Rodgers’ side to three successive Scottish Premiership titles and indeed back-to-back domestic trebles – not to mention his fine efforts for Belgium at this summer’s World Cup.
And Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham were reportedly keen on luring him south of the border during the English transfer window, only for no deal to materialise prior to the earlier deadline of August 9 last week.
And reports suggest that Boyata has gone on strike and won’t play for the club, which leaves Rodgers in a huge predicament given he is already facing something of a centre back crisis at the club – Boyata’s exclusion will only serve to compound his troubles.
And while making a move for Klavan won’t help Celtic in the immediate, given they face AEK Athens in the second leg of their Champions League third qualifying round this evening, it could certainly help in the long term in providing further strength and quality in that department.
The 32-year-old may not be a first-choice at Liverpool at present, and that’s not just because he has been struggling with a hamstring problem in recent times, but one mustn’t forget that the defender has made 53 senior appearances for the Reds during his two-year stint at Anfield, 39 of which have come in the Premier League.
Thus, to turn out that many times for Liverpool, especially a Liverpool side that have secured back-to-back top four finishes, underlines the Estonian’s credentials in the centre of defence, and while he hasn’t always convinced at the top end of the Premier League, he appears accomplished enough to produce the goods in the Scottish Premiership.
And having appeared seven times for Klopp’s men en route to the final of the Champions League last season, starting on three occasions, he even has experience on the European stage which can only be of benefit to Rodgers and his side, who will hope to again make some sort of statement on the continential stage this time round.
Thus, with Klavan reportedly available for transfer, and Rodgers facing something of a defensive crisis following the recent Boyata developments, the ex-Liverpool chief must seek to raid his former employers for the Estonia international.
