The Celtic fans here in the Transfer Tavern are once again discussing how on earth their side will improve next season. Indeed, it’s been another strong campaign on the domestic front this season though their showing on the continental stage has left a lot to be desired.
What’s obvious for the Bhoys in our bar has been the fact Brendan Rodgers and his side have lacked a truly competent central defender. The signing of Marvin Compper has done little to help on that front and our resident Hoops believe Rodgers needs to splash the cash in order to finally fix the problem lying deep at the heart in the heart of their defence.
With that in mind, perhaps they should consider a move for Newcastle United outcast, Chancel Mbemba. The defender has struggled for game time under Rafa Benitez for much of the Spaniard’s tenure in charge of the Magpies and will surely be afforded an exit this summer if the Toon Army improve.
Despite his relative exile on Tyneside, Mbemba has all the right tools to be successful. The former Anderlecht man boasts pace and power in equal measure and, while he has been rather rash at times, the punters propping up our bar believe working under Rodgers would help develop his ability on the ball.
In fact, he’d be almost a total upgrade on Dedryck Boyata. Mbemba would bring an air of class to Parkhead and perhaps taking a step down in quality would help restore some of his confidence on the ball, giving Celtic the option of a truly quality defender to help improve on the European front.
Valued at £6.30m by Transfermarkt, Celtic seriously should consider splashing the cash on Mbemba this summer if they’re serious about continuing their progress.
