Celtic supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side return to top spot in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend.
Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their clash with table-toppers Kilmarnock off the back of drawing 1-1 with Motherwell in their previous league clash, and thus seeking to get back to winning ways against Steve Clarke’s in-form side. And the Bhoys did so in emphatic fashion on Saturday as a brace from James Forrest alongside goals from Odsonne Edouard, Mikael Lustig, and Ryan Christie inspired the hosts to a 5-1 success at Celtic Park, thus returning them to the summit of the division.
As such, there have been many delighted Celtic fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be looking ahead to the January transfer window, what with their side likely needing reinforcements in a bid to continue their domination of football north of the border.
And there is little doubt that the right back department is something of a concern heading into the remainder of the season, which is why the Bhoys should seek to lure Leicester City’s Danny Simpson to Parkhead in a bid to bolster that area.
Ultimately, Sweden international Lustig has been an excellent servant to Celtic ever since his move from Rosenborg back in 2012, and while he did net in the 5-1 win over Killy at the weekend, he has on the whole failed to entirely convince of his capabilities this season.
And with deputy Cristian Gamboa clearly not doing enough to give Rodgers something to think about in that area of the field, given he has mustered just one Scottish Premiership start so far this season, it seems clear that another accomplished option is needed in that area of the field.
And given the success the Bhoys have had in luring Filip Benkovic from Leicester during the summer, they should seek to replicate that by persuading right back Simpson of a move north of the border.
21-year-old Benkovic only made the move to the King Power Stadium during the close season but was shipped out on loan by manager Claude Puel, with Celtic the main beneficiaries given the Croatia international has been outstanding in the heart of Rodgers backline this term, appearing in each of their last eight league games – his arrival has proven to be a masterstroke.
And same could well happen if fellow Leicester man Simpson were to move to Parkhead, as while the 31-year-old has struggled for regular football this term, he has proven in recent years to be a hugely adept right back, and one that would certainly compete with Lustig for that spot at Celtic.
The Englishman has been at Leicester since 2014 and in that time has played over 100 times for the Midlands outfit, including being a regular in Claudio Ranieri’s side that remarkably won the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season – that term in particular, Simpson was outstanding.
And while first team football at Leicester hasn’t been overly forthcoming recently, the 31-year-old has proven his worth ample times in the past to suggest that he could well be an upgrade on Swedish star Lustig at Celtic.
And given the success they have had luring Benkovic away from Leicester, Rodgers’ side should seek to replicate that by convincing teammate Simpson of a move north of the border.
