Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern have been heard muttering curse words after they were alerted to a wealth of late interest in a key defender, which includes two Premier League sides.
The Daily Mail says relegation-battling duo Sunderland and Crystal Palace are both eyeing late moves for central defender Jozo Simunovic, whilst Quique Sanchez Flores’ Espanyol want to take the Croatian to La Liga.
22-year-old Simunovic has become a key-player for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season, making 20 appearances overall and losing just one of the games he has played – a 2-0 defeat to Spanish giants Barcelona in the Champions League.
Therefore, Rodgers is desperate not to sell but Sunderland have cash in hand following Patrick van Aanholt’s sale to Crystal Palace, whilst Sam Allardyce continues to push for further recruits to bolster his defensive line.
Whether Celtic can hold onto the young defender remains to be seen as our landlord has pointed out Newcastle United and Torino have both been interested in the defender recently, which will only add to the late drama.
The Celtic fans here inside the Football Transfer Tavern admit they’d be gutted to see the defender depart the club this window, but remain optimistic that Rodgers will keep hold of the 22-year-old beyond the January window.
