Celtic should consider move for Stoke City striker Saido Berahino

Celtic supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their team bow out of the Champions League earlier this week courtesy of a 3-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of AEK Athens.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have made the group stages of Europe’s elite competition in each of the last two seasons, and routine successes over Alashkert and Rosenborg in the opening two qualifying rounds suggested that they may do so again. However, the Bhoys could only muster a 1-1 draw at Parkhead last week against AEK Athens to leave them with work to do in the Greek capital on Tuesday, and they were unable to get the job done in going down 2-1 on the night to thus lose 3-2 on aggregate.

As such, there have been many despondent Celtic fans up and down the country, several of whom are calling for the club’s hierarchy to invest in the playing squad in the final few weeks of the Scottish window.

And one man their side should seek to take a punt on is Stoke City striker Saido Berahino, valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt, as doing so could turn out to be a Celtic transfer masterstroke were Rodgers to get the forward back to his best.

Ultimately, it has been a testing time for the 24-year-old since his move to the bet365 Stadium back in January 2017, what with the Englishman failing to net at all in 30 appearances for the Potters since then.

And this is all after a hugely promising spell at West Brom in which Berahino became one of the hottest properties in the Premier League, not least in the 2014/15 season in which he netted 14 times in the league, and finished the campaign with 20 goals in all competitions.

Thus, it looked for all the world that the 24-year-old was going to go on and become a star for both club and indeed country, but it simply hasn’t worked out like that for the striker, for one reason or another, yet it’s clear that he has genuine pedigree in front of goal, and thus potential just waiting to be unlocked.

And that is why Rodgers must seek to take a punt on the striker, as were the Celtic chief able to get the best out of him once again, he is likely to be a prolific striker at Scottish Premiership level.

Moussa Dembele’s future remains uncertain heading into the final few weeks of the Scottish window to suggest that the Bhoys may need to be planning for his departure, and while Berahino isn’t necessarily a name that will jump out to Celtic fans, one mustn’t forget that he was the next big-thing in the Premier League a matter of years ago.

And getting him back to that level could prove very beneficial for Celtic, which is why Rodgers should take a punt on the striker this month, as doing so could prove to be a transfer masterstroke.
