Celtic desperately need to open their chequebook to improve their poor start to the season.
The Hoops are in danger of being knocked out of the Champions League after failing to beat AEK Athens in the first-leg at Celtic Park. Celtic were beaten by Hearts courtesy of a Kyle Lafferty goal which will hurt confidence heading into the second leg in Greece. Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to qualify for the group stages for the fifth season in a row.
Scottish clubs have until the end of August to finalise new signings. While their rivals have strengthened significantly, Celtic have been quiet in the window. Rodgers have made just one permanent signing, breaking their club-record to land Odsonne Eduoard permanently from Paris St Germain.
Rodgers must be desperate to bolster his defence and should attempt to lure Chelsea youngster, Ethan Ampadu, to Celtic Park. Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, the 17-year-old is tipped for a bright future at Stamford Bridge after joining from Exeter City last summer. His impressive performances in the youth sides earned him a place in the first-team, and he became the first Chelsea player born in the 2000’s to pull on a Blue shirt.
Following Maurizio Sarri’s arrival, the Wales international was handed a start in pre-season alongside David Luiz. However, a move to the SPFL could be brilliant for his development with first-team chances likely to be limited at Chelsea. Rodgers has a reputation for developing young players and would hand Ampadu a prominent role in the Celtic squad.
Both sides would benefit from a temporary switch.
