Celtic should offer Ruben Loftus-Cheek a much-needed summer escape route

Celtic are looking to get their season back on track against FK Suduva in their most important fixture of the season.

The Hoops were embarrassed in the Champions League qualifying round, crashing out at the hands of AEK Athens. They will now enter the Europa League play-off round alongside Rangers looking to secure European football at Celtic Park next season. Celtic were drawn to face FK Suduva with the first leg taking place in Lithuania tomorrow.

Defeat against the Greek champions should show Rodgers that he needs to strengthen his squad this summer. With Rangers adding a host of players to their team and looking good under Steven Gerrard, it could be the most competitive SPFL season in recent years with Hearts also making a perfect start to the season. New additions are needed if Celtic are to make it nine in a row.

Therefore, Celtic should make an incredibly ambitious attempt to sign Chelsea midfielder – Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old has been at the club since the age of eight but has failed to break into the first-team at Stamford Bridge. He impressed at Crystal Palace on loan last year and earned a place in England’s World Cup squad. Despite his showings, Chelsea signed Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic to push him further down the pecking order.

Loftus-Cheek played just 22 minutes against Huddersfield and was left out of the squad entirely for the visit of Arsenal. With game time likely to be limited again, he should seek a loan move to continue his development, and Celtic Park could be the perfect destination. Rodgers has a reputation for bringing the best out of young players and worked with Loftus-Cheek during his time as a youth coach in London. Celtic could offer him the chance to feature regularly in Europe should they progress to the group stages of the Europa League.

Landing Loftus-Cheek would be a serious coup for the Hoops and get their season back on track.
