Celtic supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team clinch the Scottish Premiership title on Sunday courtesy of a 5-0 thrashing of Rangers at Celtic Park.
Brendan Rodgers’ men went into the Old Firm derby knowing that all three points against the Gers would seal a seventh successive league crown, and they produced a dominant performance to further underline their supremacy of football north of the border. A brace from Odsonne Edouard alongside strikes from James Forrest, Tom Rogic, and Callum McGregor secured a comprehensive victory for the Bhoys, in turn moving them ten points clear of second place Aberdeen with just nine points to play for.
Consequently, there have been many buoyant Celtic fans in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are hoping that their team can add the Scottish Cup to their trophy cabinet later this month, which would in turn seal a second successive domestic treble.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Bhoys to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking midfielder Rogic with a move to Premier League side Southampton.
And were the Scottish giants to indeed sanction the Australian’s departure to the South Coast this summer, they simply have to ask for goalkeeper Fraser Forster in return.
Ultimately, while our resident Celtic fans won’t want their side to let Rogic go, they may have difficulty saying no given that he has just 12 months left on his current contract, and as of yet has not agreed an extension.
Yet given how influential he has been for Rodgers’ side this term, they do have some strength in the negotiations, and given how well they have served Southampton in the past with players like Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk, they should ask for something in return.
And with England international Forster struggling for regular football at St Mary’s, they should seek to re-sign the shot-stopper as part of a possible deal involving Rogic.
The 30-year-old arguably made his name when on the books at Celtic between 2010 and 2014, keeping 101 clean sheets in just 197 appearances for the Bhoys, helping them to three Scottish Premiership titles.
However, the Englishman has lost his place to Alex McCarthy at Southampton this season after a tricky first half of the campaign, and as such his future is very much in doubt with McCarthy continuing to prove his worth between the sticks in Mark Hughes’ side.
And a return to Celtic, where he played some of his best football, could be exactly what Forster needs to rebuild his confidence and thus return to his highest level, the level that has won him six England caps and consolidated his status as one of the best English goalkeepers.
And with Celtic likely to face a battle keeping hold of Rogic were Southampton to intensify their interest, the Bhoys must seek to get something out of the deal, namely the signature of Forster.
