Though the Celtic fans here in the Transfer Tavern were disappointed to lose at home to Anderlecht, the fact they progressed into the Europa League after Christmas has gone down a storm amongst the Bhoys in our bar.
Clearly, the Hoops have quite the task on their hands to improve on the continental front, though the idea of seeing more European games at Celtic Park in 2018 has delighted our punters clad in green and white. However, despite the good feelings amongst our drinkers, reports from the Daily Mail have proven rather worrying.
They claim Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion are lining up a move for Moussa Dembele over the course of the January transfer window and are reportedly ready to bid a whopping £20m. The Frenchman has proven a revelation since his arrival in Glasgow in 2016 on a free transfer from Fulham and his departure certainly would be a huge one.
Though the reported fee is clearly a lot of money, Celtic have no real need to sell at this point of the season and are thought to value the 21-year-old at £30m anyway, a figure largely agreed with by the punters propping up our bar.
Celtic shouldn’t sell for £20m and Dembele is clearly destined for bigger things than Brighton, with all due respect. While he probably needs another step between Celtic and the elite, the idea of going to a side battling relegation doesn’t make much sense right now.
