Cheikhou Kouyate would be a very welcome coup for Celtic and the SPFL

Celtic are on their way to the next round of the Champions League after a comfortable first-leg victory over Alashkert.

The Hoops looked good in their first competitive outing of the season against the Armenian champions. Playing alongside Mousa Dembele up top, Odsonne Eduoard opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time. Late goals from James Forrest and Callam McGregor sealed the routine victory.

Brendan Rodgers is yet to make a significant move in the transfer market so far this summer. Strengthening the squad will be vital to retaining the Scottish Premiership title and challenging in Europe next year. With Rangers making nine signings already, the Celtic faithful will be desperate to see some new arrivals.

A potential signing could be West Ham powerhouse – Cheikhou Kouyate. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the Hammers are willing to listen to offers for the Senegalese international following an inconsistent season. The signing of Jack Wilshere has meant he is surplus to requirements at the London Stadium.

Rodgers will be aware that Celtic skipper Scott Brown is approaching the end of his career at 33 and Kouyate could be the ideal long-term replacement. He made 33 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring twice and assisting five. The Northern Irishman is a known admirer of Kouyate and attempted to sign him during his time with Liverpool.

A bargain at just £10m, Celtic would be foolish to turn him down.
