Forget Dawson: Celtic would be better served landing his £4.5m-rated West Brom teammate

Celtic supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side celebrate their Scottish Premiership title success with a routine 3-1 win at Hearts on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ men sealed a seventh successive league crown courtesy of a 5-0 thumping of Old Firm rivals Rangers last weekend, and they will hope to clinch back-to-back domestic trebles by beating Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final later this month. And they appear to be building up quite the run of form despite going behind at Tynecastle to Kyle Lafferty’s strike, with goals from Dedryck Boyata, Moussa Dembele, and Scott Sinclair securing all three points for the Bhoys, in turn sealing a 24th victory of the season.

Thus, there have been many delighted Celtic supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can record a third successive win when they host Kilmarnock this evening.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Bhoys fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their side with a move for West Brom defender Craig Dawson.

And while the 28-year-old would likely be a useful addition to Rodgers’ squad, they should forget about him and seek to instead lure his £4.5 million-rated West Brom teammate James Morrison (as per Transfermarkt) to Parkhead.

Ultimately, after enjoying a decent season for the Baggies despite relegation, Dawson is a target for several other Premier League clubs, which makes Celtic’s task of attempting to convince the Englishman of a move north of the border a particularly tricky one.

And with Newcastle reportedly seeking to land the £15 million-rated star (as per The Daily Mail) this summer, Celtic could be priced out of the race for Dawson, and as such would be better served investing their funds elsewhere, not least Scotland international Morrison.

The 31-year-old may well have struggled with injury this season but has throughout his time at the Hawthorns proven to be a hugely adept midfielder at Premier League level, scoring 39 goals and laying on 36 assists in 317 appearances for the Baggies.

Be it from long range or indeed standing over a set piece situation, the Scottish ace has more often than not delivered for the Midlands outfit, but their relegation from the top-flight this term, alongside a contract set to expire this summer, may see him consider his options.

And having been linked with Celtic in the past, he could finally seek to make the move to Parkhead.

Ultimately, the Bhoys are heading in the right direction under Rodgers and as such will be targeting further quality to seriously bolster the squad, with the hope that they can begin to make their mark on the European stage.

Yes, Morrison may not necessarily command regular first team football at Celtic Park, but he’d certainly add greater quality and depth to Rodgers’ midfield department, while his arrival could also compensate for the possible departure of Tom Rogic amid Premier League interest.

And the lure of possibly turning out in the Champions League over the Championship is sure to be enough to convince the 31-year-old of a move north of the border.

Thus, with Celtic likely to struggle to compete in the race for Dawson, they should forget about him and instead target Baggies teammate Morrison this summer.
