Celtic supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with their team eyeing up signings that can maintain their domination of Scottish football next season.
Brendan Rodgers’ men once again swept all before them this time round in winning the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup titles, thus earning back-to-back domestic trebles having done so under the former Liverpool chief last term as well. Yet the Bhoys will be well aware that they’ll have to improve the squad over the summer to again dominate football north of the border, and indeed make their mark on European competition following their Europa League last-32 exit this time round.
As such, there are many expectant Celtic fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Crystal Palace will listen to offers for striker Christian Benteke this summer.
And having already signed the £19.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) once during his managerial career at Liverpool, Rodgers should seek to reunite with the linked-away forward at Parkhead this year to help the 27-year-old reignite his career.
Ultimately, the Belgium international has endured a testing 12 months with the Eagles, netting just three goals and laying on six assists in 31 Premier League appearances for Roy Hodgson’s side this term, to the point that Palace have often looked a lot better without Benteke in the team.
Yes, injuries have played a part in his struggles, but with Palace eyeing the next level next season under Hodgson after climbing clear of relegation this term, the former England chief simply cannot rely on the 27-year-old to produce the goods, not when the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend have led the line brilliantly at times this season.
And with Palace reportedly willing to offload the striker, Celtic should be ready to pounce, as it wasn’t too long ago that Benteke was scoring goals for fun in the English top-flight.
Yes, this term was a disappointment, but prior to that the Belgian ace netted at least ten Premier League goals in all but one of his prior five seasons in English football, with his tally of nine for Liverpool back in 2015/16 the only blot on an otherwise impressive record.
So while things haven’t been great this time round, one mustn’t forget his previous exploits at top tier level – ultimately, the 27-year-old remains a quality forward and one that could seriously benefit Rodgers’ side.
The former Aston Villa forward would give the Northern Irishman another more direct option up top given Benteke’s incredible aerial prowess, while the question marks over Moussa Dembele’s future could result in the Bhoys being slightly short in the attacking ranks come August.
And if the Scottish giants are eyeing the next level, especially in European competition, these are the sort of additions they must seek to make to finally make some ground on the continental stage once again.
And with Palace reportedly willing to listen to offers for Benteke, the forward should seriously consider reigniting his career by reuniting with Rodgers, three years after they linked up at Liverpool, north of the border at Celtic.
