According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Loris Karius looks set for a move away this month. The 25-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Liverpool and has done so since 2016, in which time the goalkeeper slowly but surely began to earn the number one jersey, only for a shocker in the Champions League final in May to put pay to those hopes.
And reports suggest that manager Jurgen Klopp is willing to let the £10.8 million-rated flop (as per Transfermarkt) leave Anfield this summer, and while Besiktas appear to be leading the race for the German, Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic would provide the ideal destination for Karius to reignite his career.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old has never fully convinced of his capabilities between the sticks at Liverpool following his arrival from Mainz back in 2016, although manager Klopp did give him the nod at the start of 2018 to suggest that he was the club’s next long-term shot-stopper.
And while he did reasonably well in a much-improved Reds backline in the second half of last season, his two errors in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid underlined that he simply isn’t at the level required for Liverpool, thus prompting Klopp to break the world-record for a goalkeeper to lure Alisson to Anfield.
And with further errors in pre-season, it’s clear that the former German Under-21 international has no future at Anfield and needs to get out of the club as soon as possible to pursue with his career – Celtic should offer him that chance.
The Bhoys have themselves endured a testing few months in doing minimal work in the transfer market over the summer alongside exiting the Champions League before the group stages, thus leaving Rodgers facing a tricky season ahead in trying to maintain their domination of football in Scotland.
And the goalkeeping department appears to be an area in need of reinforcements as, although Craig Gordon appears to be the undisputed number one, the Scotland international will turn 36 at the end of December, and it remains to be seen just how long he has left at the top of the Scottish game.
Scott Bain joined the club on a free transfer this summer to bolster those ranks, but with just one League Cup appearance so far he’s clearly not in a position to challenge Gordon for the gloves on a regular basis, whereas Karius could be in a bid to get his career going again.
Yes, the German’s time at Liverpool has been a testing one, but there have been glimpses that he is a very accomplished goalkeeper, just not at the level needed for Liverpool to genuinely challenge for major honours.
And the chance of a fresh start at somewhere like Celtic, who could do with another goalkeeper to provide further competition to 35-year-old Gordon, could prove to be the ideal destination for the 25-year-old as he seeks to resurrect his career.
